Description
Burrowing Owls are small owls about 7 – 10 inches tall that eat a variety of different prey species, including large insects, small rodents, snakes, lizards and frogs. They nest exclusively underground, mainly in burrows abandoned by prairie dogs.
Burrowing owls arrive in Colorado each spring between March and April, and spend their time in the prairie dog colonies at the Coyote Ridge Natural Area and the Pawnee National Grassland. They are a threatened species in Colorado due to loss of habitat, prairie dog eradication, and pesticide use.
