Bighorn sheep is Colorado’s official state animal! But Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are currently endangered. Diseases like bacterial pneumonia from domestic sheep and goats are a huge threat to bighorn sheep. Other threats (historical and current) include overhunting, competition with domestic species for food, mining, vehicle collisions, and habitat fragmentation. Rocky Mountain Wild’s Go Big! Central Colorado Bighorn Sheep Survey engages citizen scientists in recording observations about bighorn sheep to fill in gaps in our knowledge about habitat nad migration corridors, and to help managers plan for bighorn conservation as development, traffic, and demand for recreation access increase in Colorado.
